INDIA is set to resume methanol exports to Bangladesh using the Brahmaputra inland waterway network, marking a major boost for regional trade connectivity. Two cargo vessels leased by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APL) from the Inland Water Transport Department will carry a combined 1,080 tonnes of locally manufactured methanol—540 tonnes per vessel—from the Bogibeel terminal in Assam’s Dibrugarh to Bangladesh through National Waterway 2. The shipment travels an estimated 783 kilometres over seven days to reach Dhaka, providing a direct and cost-effective logistics corridor for cross-border chemical trade. In addition to fulfilling growing Bangladeshi industrial demand, the resumption of regular waterway shipments helps streamline bulk chemical transit between India’s Northeast and neighbouring markets while easing reliance on traditional road networks, said a report.
