Fruit exporters in Kashmir are urging authorities to introduce refrigerated rail transport to improve the efficiency and reliability of fruit shipments, particularly for apples and other perishable produce. Growers and traders say the lack of an adequate cold chain rail network forces them to rely heavily on road transport, which often leads to delays, higher costs, and quality deterioration during transit. This is especially critical during peak harvest seasons when large volumes need to be moved quickly to markets across India. Industry stakeholders believe that dedicated reefer rail services would help reduce post-harvest losses, extend shelf life, and ensure better price realisation for farmers. It would also enhance access to distant markets by maintaining consistent temperature control throughout the journey.
